When someone asks me this question, they are usually already in the middle of something. They are not asking from curiosity. They are asking because the relationship has reached a point where the question is real, and they want to know whether what they are sensing is the actual direction of travel.
What I look at
I look at where the relationship is genuinely sitting right now. Whether the disconnection is a phase or a direction. Whether there is something that would change the trajectory, and if so, what and whether either person has the will for it. I look at both people, not only the one in front of me. I look at what is moving and what has already settled, even if it has not been spoken.
I do not tell people what to do. I report what I find. If the reading shows that the relationship is moving toward dissolution, I say so. If it shows that what looks like an ending is a crisis with a different path through it, I say that too. I have been doing this work since 1975. In a long marriage or partnership, the reading is almost never simple. I take the time it requires.
