Inner Authority in Human Design

Inner authority is the part of a Human Design chart that the system treats as your decision-maker. Type describes how your energy is said to work in general, and strategy describes how to meet life before you decide. Authority answers a narrower question: when a real choice is in front of you, where does the system say a clear answer comes from? The teaching names seven kinds: emotional, sacral, splenic, ego, self-projected, environmental, and lunar.

If you want your own authority read against a decision you are facing, my Human Design reading is a CA$70 written report sent by email within 3 days. This note explains each authority, how the chart assigns it, and the mistakes I see most often.

How the chart sets your authority

Authority follows a hierarchy based on which centres are defined. If the Solar Plexus is defined, authority is emotional, whatever else the chart shows. Jovian Archive puts this at about half of all people. If the Solar Plexus is undefined and the Sacral is defined, authority is sacral. Below those come splenic, ego, and self-projected authority. Some Projectors have no inner authority in the usual sense, which is often called environmental authority, and every Reflector has lunar authority.

Type narrows the options. Generators and Manifesting Generators have either emotional or sacral authority. Manifestors have emotional, splenic, or ego authority. Projectors can have emotional, splenic, ego, self-projected, or environmental authority. Reflectors have lunar authority. The myBodyGraph explanation of inner authority covers the mechanics in more depth.

Emotional authority

Emotional authority is described as clarity that arrives over time, after the emotional wave has moved. The phrase often used in the teaching is that there is no truth in the now. That does not mean your feelings are wrong. It means a feeling at its peak, or at its lowest point, is not treated as the final answer.

The usual mistake is taking intensity for certainty. Relief, dread, excitement, and urgency can all feel like knowing. The practice I suggest is plain: let the question survive several moods before you call it clear. If other people are pushing you for an answer today, name that pressure, because urgency is often the wrong setting for this authority.

Sacral authority

Sacral authority belongs to Generators and Manifesting Generators whose Solar Plexus is undefined. The signal is a bodily yes, no, or not now that appears in response to something real. It tends to be immediate when the right thing is actually in front of you.

Trouble starts when the decision is made from explanation, fear, politeness, or a picture of the future. A sacral response needs something concrete to respond to. In a reading I often suggest turning a large, abstract question into a few simple choices, because the body answers a clear question more readily than a vague one.

Splenic authority

Splenic authority is described as a quiet, immediate instinct that speaks once and does not argue. It is found in some Manifestors and Projectors. The signal belongs to the present moment, so an old fear that has circled for weeks should not be mistaken for it.

The common error is overriding the first signal because the mind wants proof afterward. People with this authority often tell me they knew at the start and talked themselves out of it. A reading cannot recover a moment that has passed, but it can help you notice the pattern the next time it appears.

Ego authority

Ego authority comes from the Heart centre, which the system also calls the Ego. It concerns will, capacity, and what you can honestly commit to. It appears in some Manifestors and Projectors. The question it asks is not whether something is a good idea, but whether you truly want it and have the capacity to carry it.

The distortion here is promising from pride, guilt, or the wish to look strong. I suggest listening to what you say when you are not performing strength. Commit where will and capacity are both present, and be careful with promises made mainly to please someone.

Self-projected authority

Self-projected authority is found only in Projectors. The signal is described as identity truth heard through your own voice. The practice is to speak the question aloud to people you trust, people who listen without steering, and to notice what you hear yourself say.

The risk is adopting someone else's direction because it sounds reasonable or brings approval. The listeners are there so you can hear yourself, not so they can decide for you.

Environmental and lunar authority

Some Projectors have no inner authority in the usual sense. The teaching suggests talking decisions through with trusted people and paying attention to the place you are in, since clarity is said to come from the right environment and the right sounding boards. Deciding in the wrong room, because it is convenient or expected, is the main pressure here.

Reflectors have lunar authority. For a significant decision the system advises waiting through a lunar cycle, about 29 days, and noticing what stays true across many moods, places, and people. I wrote more about this in my note on the Reflector. When circumstances allow it, a large decision deserves the full cycle. When they do not, I say so plainly in the report.

How I read authority in a report

In a reading I spend more time on authority than on type, because it bears directly on the decision you asked about. Two Generators can be given different advice because one has emotional authority and the other sacral. I read authority together with strategy, profile, and the open centres, following the order in my guide on how to read a Human Design chart.

Suppose you write to me with emotional authority and a job offer that expires on Friday. I would look at what the wave seems to be doing, whether the deadline is real or a pressure tactic, and what has stayed constant in how you feel about the role. Then I would write about that offer, not about emotional authority in general. Work questions like this are covered in more detail in my note on Human Design for career decisions.

What authority cannot do

Human Design is a reflective framework. It is not a scientific test and it does not predict events. Authority is a way of looking at how you decide, not permission to ignore facts, contracts, deadlines, or advice from someone qualified. If your chart suggests waiting and a legal deadline says act, the deadline still applies.

What to send

Send your date, exact time, and place of birth with a short note about one current decision. Authority depends on which centres are defined, so an accurate time matters. My note on Human Design without an exact birth time explains why. The report is CA$70, sent by email within 3 days, with no call.
