How To Tell If a Psychic Is Genuine: An Honest Guide

I have worked privately as a reader since 1975. In that time I have watched a great many people walk in carrying fear, and a great many so-called readers learn to feed on it. So when someone asks me how to tell if a psychic is genuine, I do not give them comfort. I give them a method. The method is simple, and once you have it, you will rarely be fooled again.

The first red flag: fear, then a fee

The oldest trick in this trade is to frighten you and then sell you the cure. A reader tells you there is a curse on your family, a dark presence around your money, a shadow on your marriage. Then, almost in the same breath, comes the price of removing it. This is not spiritual work. It is a business model built on dread. A genuine reader may tell you a hard truth, but they will never manufacture a danger and then conveniently happen to sell the only remedy.

Urgency, guarantees, and the endless upsell

Watch how a reader handles time and money. The con artist works fast. You must act now, today, before the moon turns or the window closes. Real insight does not expire by Friday. Pressure is a sales tactic, not a spiritual one.

Be just as wary of guarantees. Anyone who promises to bring your lover back, to make a specific person call you within three days, or to guarantee a particular outcome is lying to you. No honest reader controls another person's free will, and none can promise the future like a delivery date.

Then there is the upsell that never ends. You paid for one reading, and suddenly you need a candle, then a deeper cleansing, then a second session, then a third. The fee keeps climbing because the work was never the point. The work was the hook. A real reading is a finished thing, not the doorway to a payment plan.

Vague flattery dressed as insight

Pay close attention to how much the reader actually says. The fraud speaks in lines that fit almost anyone: you are sensitive but few understand you, you have known a recent loss, there is someone in your past you still think of. These are not messages. They are mirrors. They flatter you and tell you nothing, and you supply the meaning yourself without noticing you did the work.

The green flags of a real reader

Now the better news. Honest readers have habits too, and once you know them they are easy to spot.

The first is honesty about limits. A genuine reader will tell you what they cannot see and what they will not do. I turn work away when it is not right for me, and I say so plainly. Someone who claims to know everything knows very little.

The second is clear pricing. You should know what you are paying and what you receive before any money changes hands. No surprises, no escalating cures, no fee that grows the more frightened you become. A fair reader treats your money with the same respect they ask you to give their work.

The third is specificity. A real message has texture and detail. It may surprise you. It may name something you had not mentioned. It does not simply agree with whatever you bring.

The fourth, and to my mind the most important, is a willingness to be wrong. A reader who can say I am not certain, or I may be mistaken here, is a reader who respects the truth more than their own reputation. Certainty is cheap. Honesty costs something.

People sometimes ask why I give no readings by telephone and put on no performance. The answer follows from everything above. A written report cannot lean on a warm voice, a dramatic pause, or your reactions in the moment to steer me. I cannot read your face and adjust. I must sit with your question, do the work, and put down what I find in plain words you can keep, reread, and weigh at your leisure. Writing removes the theatre. What is left is the reading itself, and that is the only thing you should ever pay for.
